ABOUT THE COFFEE

“Each cup of coffee is a mini local chronicle, recording the natural landscapes, seasonal changes and climate variations of its origin. When it touches your tongue, it leaves not just rich flavor, but also the soul and terroir of its birthplace,” says Mr. Hongjun Zhang, founder of Yunlan Estate.

In 2017, Yunlan Estate imported Geisha seeds from Panama’s famed La Esmeralda Estate, planting them at 1750 meters in the lush rainforest valley of Menghai County, Yunnan. For four years, Mr. Zhang returned all harvested coffee back to the soil, refining the species and nurturing the land. By 2023, Yunlan celebrated its first bountiful Geisha harvest, and in 2024, the estate reached an impressive 1000 kg yield. Combining Panama’s classic Geisha characteristics - floral notes and pear - with Yunnan’s unique terroir, this Geisha also reveals delicate flavors of white tea and barley tea.

Yunlan Estate
Founded in 1999, Yunlan Estate is the realization of Mr. Zhang’s dream to elevate Yunnan coffee to global acclaim. The estate grows over 20 rare varieties at 1750 meters, with all cherries hand-picked at full ripeness. While many embrace experimental fermentation methods, Yunlan stays true to traditional washed, sun-dried and honey processes, showcasing the land’s essence through clean, complex flavors.

Yunlan’s journey reflects resilience and innovation. After a devastating fire in 2014 wiped out 15 years of progress, they rebuilt with renewed focus, partnering with research institutes to reintroduce rare varieties. The Geisha project, started in 2017, is just the beginning of their mission to redefine Yunnan coffee for the world.

This Geisha stands as a testament to Yunlan’s dedication, offering a unique combination of classic Geisha elegance and the distinct terroir of Yunnan. It’s more than just coffee - it’s a story of perseverance, passion, and the land itself.
