ABOUT THE COFFEE

This coffee is sourced from farms nestled in the hills of the Nyungwe Mountain Rainforest. The high altitude, regular rainfall, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil make this region ideal for producing some of Rwanda’s finest coffee. Local farmers handpick ripe cherries and bring them to the small Nyungwe station, located in the Nyamasheke area at 1,680 meters above sea level.

The 2.5-hectare station is owned by the Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) and managed by Daniel Iryivuze, who oversees six permanent workers and 35 seasonal helpers, including 16 women. The station serves 1,047 small-scale farmers from the surrounding area, who deliver their coffee on foot or by bicycle. These farmers use organic fertilizers and benefit from RTC’s support. The daily sunshine enhances the coffee’s quality, while the cooler nights slow the cherries’ ripening process, adding depth and complexity to their flavor.

ABOUT Kmen

Kmen means ‘Tribe’—it represents deep roots that give rise to new growth. Eight years ago, Petr, the head roaster, introduced fine coffee to South Bohemia with his roastery, Fragaria Coffee, and built a strong reputation behind the bar at Café Datel.

Kmen believes there is no single ‘right’ taste in coffee; every harvest and every field produces something unique. This philosophy is reflected in their packaging and overall approach—coffee doesn’t have one universally correct flavor, but rather a spectrum of tastes. That’s why every bag highlights the fruit that best characterizes the coffee’s flavor.
